The story

All the stories belong to Nyame, the Sky-God. Ananse wants them for the world below, but stories are precious, and Nyame will not part with them easily. He names a price that sounds impossible: Ananse must bring him powerful creatures that no small spider should be able to catch.

Strength will not help Ananse against Onini the python, Osebo the leopard, or a furious swarm of Mmoboro hornets. So he studies each challenge instead. A branch, a vine, a calabash of water, and a carefully chosen question become the beginnings of plans. Again and again, a creature certain of its own advantage discovers that Ananse has noticed something it has not.

Each task has its own rhythm—one patient, one daring, one deliciously comic—and each success carries Ananse closer to the stories waiting above. But winning such a treasure raises a question larger than any challenge: what are stories for once they leave the Sky-God’s keeping?
