Heungbu and the Swallow

The story

Heungbu’s household has little to spare, but when he finds a swallow with an injured leg, he does not hesitate. With help from his family, he makes a tiny splint, tends the bird, and watches it fly away to warmer skies.

Spring returns. So does the swallow, carrying a single gourd seed in its beak. Heungbu plants it beside the house, and soon a vigorous vine climbs over the roof. Its gourds grow rounder and heavier until the family gathers to open them. What waits inside is far stranger—and far more abundant—than anything they imagined.

Heungbu’s brother, Nolbu, hears about the swallow and the marvelous seed. He notices the good fortune but not the care that came before it. Determined to produce the same result, he tries to turn another bird’s injury into an opportunity. A second vine rises, a second crop ripens, and Nolbu prepares to claim what he believes he has earned.

Drawn from Korea’s Heungbujeon story tradition and the living pansori repertory Heungbuga, this warm, theatrical tale begins with tenderness and grows into escalating magical comedy.
